Georgia legislators are wrapping up their work redrawing the state's political boundaries. Redistricting is expected to be completed on Wednesday as the state Senate votes on a new congressional map that adds a 14th district in northeast Georgia. The House has already approved the map.

The Georgia Senate redistricting committee has approved proposed changes to congressional districts. The plan passed by a 10-3 vote Tuesday and is expected to head to the Senate floor on Wednesday, bringing a speedy end to the Legislature's main business during the special session which began Aug. 15.

The Republican-controlled state House approved new congressional district maps Thursday. Democrats say the maps are part of a systematic plan to isolate minority voters. But Republicans insist they are following federal laws designed to protect minority voters.

A key House committee approved draft congressional maps Wednesday. The proposal will keep an air force base near Valdosta in the first congressional district. The draft maps now head to the full House for a vote.

Georgia's newest congressional district will be based in the northeast corner of the state. The proposed congressional map unveiled by state lawmakers on Monday also redrew political boundaries for the 13 existing U.S. House districts. It showed the new U.S. House district will cover Hall County — home to Gov. Nathan Deal.
