State education officials say fewer students than last year are attending college within the University System of Georgia this fall.

A Morehouse College official says the school is planning to make cuts after a drop in enrollment. The historically black college will furlough faculty and staff and make other budget cuts stemming from the decrease in enrollment.

Georgia’s 35 state colleges are getting $72.5 million in new funds for the upcoming school year aimed at addressing enrollment growth and increasing the number of college graduates in the state.

The University System of Georgia reports that systemwide enrollment has set a record this fall. The number of students enrolled jumped 2 percent from last fall. Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville grew most with a 43.9 percent increase.

It's getting tougher to get into Georgia's top public colleges. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that this year's freshmen at the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech and Georgia College & State University broke records for SAT scores and GPAs. But the colleges aren't admitting scores of new students, though, making admission to the campuses increasingly competitive.
