Thousands of parents jailed for child support debt could join a lawsuit claiming, Georgia locks people up for being poor. The case involves parents who couldn't afford a lawyer when they asked a judge not to send them to jail for not paying child support. Plaintiffs say, the state is running modern-day debtor's prisons for parents unable to find work.

Lawyers for six parents have filed a class-action lawsuit against the state. The plaintiffs are in jail and can’t pay child support. The suit claims they should never have been jailed in the first place.
