As temperatures begin to rise, officials from six state agencies are reminding Georgians to never leave children unattended in vehicles. At a press conference Thursday, officials demonstrated how quickly the temperature can rise inside of a closed vehicle.

A state agency has issued its first-ever yearly report on deaths of children involved in the child protection system. It found unusually high numbers of deaths in some parts of Georgia. The report by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services analyzed the causes of the deaths and identified ways the agency could improve both its prevention and responses to deaths.

A new report shows 120 children died during the first nine months of 2012 in situations where their families had contact with the Georgia's child protection agency within the last five years.

35 children who have died since December were being monitored by the state’s child protection agency. Six of them passed away from adults accidentally smothering them while sleeping in the same bed.

Documents obtained by GPB show that 35 Georgia children have died in the last month and a half compared to 92 for all of 2011.
