Savannah Technical College is serving one of the coastal area's largest employers with a new aviation training center. State and local officials were on hand this week to open a nearly $7 million classroom, hangar and lab facility. It will train graduates to work at jet manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace.

Flights from Savannah rank high on a list of pricey airfares. A new report from the US Transportation Department doesn't come as a surprise to Savannah-area travelers who drive to Jacksonville or Charleston to fly cheaply. The dilemma is partly due to the city's "not-too-small, not-too-big" market size.

With the Atlantic storm season nearing its end, the National Weather Service is taking some of its coastal-area radars offline to give them upgrades. The switch to so-called dual-polorization doppler radars is part of a 50 million dollar national radar renovation aimed at boosting forecast accuracy and speeding weather alerts.

Charleston's mayor says, he believes environmentalists when it comes to Savannah's harbor deepening. South Carolina officials recently have taken up an ecological argument against it. Georgians suspect the opposition really is about protecting of Charleston from competition. But, Mayor Joseph Riley says, the concerns are honest.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley says, she was misinterpreted last year when she seemed to soothe opponents of Savannah harbor deepening. Some South Carolinians see Savannah's proposed port expansion as a threat to Charleston's port. Her words last year came up this week when reporters asked her about a permit South Carolina recently gave to Georgia's project.
