A multi-colored crowd of about 900 people gathered at a Savannah church to pay their final respects to the city's first African-American mayor today. Floyd Adams, Jr. was remembered as a man who was quote "called to bring people together" and who reached across racial lines.

Worshippers filled Savannah's Cathedral of St. John the Baptist as the Catholic church ordained a new bishop in a solemn ceremony. Father Gregory Hartmayer was ordained leader of the 90-county Savannah Diocese, including 77,000 Catholics south of Atlanta. Nineteen bishops, including one from Ireland, attended the ceremony in the port city known for its large population of Irish decent.
Pope Benedict XVI has elevated the pastor of a small church in Metro Atlanta to lead the Diocese of Savannah. Gregory Hartmeyer will be the new Savannah bishop, overseeing 55 with 77,000 Catholics. He currently serves a parish in Lithia Springs.
