The mayor of Columbus is warning of "massive layoffs" of city workers next year if the consolidated government continues on its current path. Mayor Teresa Tomlinson also accused public safety department heads Tuesday of using the threat of layoffs to "maintain possibly inflated budgets."
The Fayette County Board of Education has voted to close four schools in the face of a $15 million budget shortfall. The vote came during a meeting Monday night in which officials said the district would only save about $4 million even with the school closures taken into account
Authorities say a Georgia town is facing a massive budget shortfall, partly due to a tax error involving an IKEA furniture distribution center. The Savannah Morning News reports that Port Wentworth officials have laid off six employees, suspended holiday pay and taken other steps to try and make up for the shortfall.
