Police say nearly every section of the Peachtree Road Race will be under the watch of surveillance cameras and officers from multiple agencies in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing. Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said Thursday that law enforcement and race organizers consulted with Boston Marathon officials and organizers of a Colorado race to incorporate their security suggestions into planning for the 10K on July 4.
The University of Georgia will ban backpacks in the school's football stadium during its commencement ceremony on May 10. UGA's spring undergraduate ceremony typically draws tens of thousands of spectators. The tightened security comes after a bombing at the Boston Marathon killed three and injured hundreds.
As the FBI investigates the bombings at the Boston Marathon, Georgians are remembering the Olympic bombing in 1996. Kent Alexander is currently General Counsel at CARE, in 1996, he was U.S. Attorney in Atlanta. He wrote the letter clearing Richard Jewell of any wrongdoing. Eric Rudolph was eventually caught and convicted of the crime.
