State education officials have pulled the plug on a project described as the largest Internet expansion in Georgia school history. The $3.6 million for the Internet upgrade is part of a plan to bring all 180 school districts up to speed in an increasingly digital era. But someone forgot to add $3.6 million to an upcoming bond issue.
Lawyers for some of the 35 defendants in Atlanta's school cheating scandal say their bonds are unreasonably high. Hurl Taylor, who represents test coordinator Donald Bullock, said his client's $1 million bond amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. Bullock was among the first defendants to surrender at the Fulton County Jail early Tuesday.
A state audit shows Georgia quietly funneled millions of taxpayer dollars into two projects in Gov. Sonny Perdue's home county as he wrapped up his second term. The audit found $4 million went toward the purchase of a forestland known as Oaky Woods that's adjacent to property that Perdue owns in Houston County.
