The Braves are retiring John Smoltz's number. Atlanta announced Monday that Smoltz's No. 29 will never be worn by another Braves player. Smoltz also will be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame at Turner Field. The ceremonies will take place June 8.

Metro Atlanta's transit authority is announcing the return of its Braves shuttle as the team gears up for its home opener Friday. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority said the shuttle bus is a good way to avoid snarled traffic and expensive parking.

The Atlanta Braves return to the baseball diamond Saturday. The team's spring training game schedule begins in Lake Buena Vista, Florida with a home exhibition game against the Detroit Tigers. First pitch between the Braves and Tigers is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. EST.

The United States Specialty Sports Association will bring a 48-team Florida-Georgia Showdown to Valdosta next April. The weekend tournament will feature the best traveling teams for kids from the two states aged 9 to 14. With 12 to 20 players on each team, that usually means at least 10 hotel rooms per team, said tournament officials.

Just like that, the season is over for the Atlanta Braves. Wednesday night, on the final day of baseball's regular season, the Braves lost 4-3 in 13 innings to the Philidelphia Phillies in Atlanta. That gave the St. Louis Cardinals the National League Wild Card playoff spot--by virtue of their win over the Houston Astros.

Wednesday is major league baseball's final day of the regular season, and the Atlanta Braves have fallen into a tie for the National League Wild Card playoff spot. Should the Braves and Cardinals both win, or both lose their respective games Wednesday, a one game playoff will be held Thursday in St. Louis to determine the Wild Card winner. However, if one wins today while the other loses, the winner earns the wild card outright.

If the Atlanta Braves are to make a second straight playoff appearance, they'll have to do something over the next three nights they haven't done a lot of lately -- win. With three regular season games left, the Braves' lead for the National League's wild card playoff spot is down to one game over St. Louis.
