State officials have halted public access to an animal control shelter in Savannah for two weeks after an outbreak of an upper respiratory illness was found among animals there. Miller said adoptions from the facility and the intake of most animals must cease during the quarantine.

Adoptions at the Macon animal shelter are up 166-percent since 2008. Central Georgia Cares, a non-profit, formed to market the facility is crediting the success to a social media marketing campaign.
