Savannah is re-writing its alcoholic beverage ordinances. The city already has some of the most liberal liquor laws in the nation. But the rules don't address some more novel uses alcohol. Beekeeper Ted Dennard wants to stock his stores with mead, the ancient honey-made drink, and offer people samples.

The city council on Tybee Island has repealed a ban on drinking alcohol on the beach, though they say the ban was rarely enforced. An amended ordinance also officially legalizes drinking on public streets, parking lots and sidewalks, which has also been historically permitted.

A metro Atlanta county is cracking down on underage drinking. Cobb County last week became the second jurisdiction in the area to approve an ordinance aimed at holding adults more accountable for their role in underage drinking.

The Carrollton City Council approved measures Monday night that would allow open containers downtown as long as the beverage was bought at a business in the downtown area.

Georgia's home-grown liquor industry is getting a new player. Officials at Milledgeville-based Georgia Distilling Company say, they now have federal and local permits and soon expect their state permit to begin operation. A company official says, the state permit follows the federal and local ones, so he's planning on opening in two months.
