The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools may strip Atlanta Public Schools of its accreditation. This could put the 50,000-student district in danger of losing private grants and could keep students from gaining admission and winning scholarships at some colleges.
South Georgia's Coffee County Schools will get another visit from their accrediting agency next month. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed the system on probation earlier this year after school board members became dysfunctional and micromanaging and threatened school staff.
The State Board of Education Thursday adopted the nation’s first standards and ethics policies for local school boards. The Local School Board Governance Standards and Model Ethics Policy is a result of Senate Bill 84 passed earlier this year. It allows the state more control over school boards, including giving the Governor the right to remove school board members if accreditation is at risk.
A third Georgia school system may have accreditation problems with the agency that oversees the standards. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has ordered the DeKalb County school district to provide evidence of their compliance with its guidelines by Sept. 11. SACS will use that information to decide whether a full-scale investigation into the system's policies is necessary.
