Some schools in Richmond County have chronic absenteeism rates that are much higher than the state average. For example, 41 percent of the students at Craig Houghton Elementary School had at least five unexcused absences during 2010-2011, and 42 percent of the students at T.W. Josey High School missed 15 days or more.
Last year, one in ten kids in public schools missed more than 15 days of school. A state study shows how important being in class is to student achievement. The State Department of Education tracked the performance and attendance of students from 2007 to 2011.
