On the final day of 2011 GHSA basketball, a total of six state titles were handed out. Unlike Friday there were no upsets, and most of the games were one-sided. In the Class AAA boys state title game, Columbia pulled away from Butler in the fourth quarter to win their second consecutive championship by a score of 56-37.

The rich got richer. The Milton Eagles, 2010 Class AAAAA boys champion, returned nearly all of their roster intact, having lost zero seniors, and even added a huge piece off the bench to give the Milton faithful hope of a mythical national championship.

The Douglas County Lady Tigers were on a roll coming into the Class AAAA semifinals, winning 30 consecutive games including a big win against Miller Grove in the semifinals. However, Forest Park had too much experience and came away with a 56-47 victory.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a dynasty as “a succession of rulers of the same line of descent.” From that definition, you can see why the world of sports has adopted the word “dynasty” to describe its most dominant teams.

In Elite Eight action from five different sites across the state, 20 teams punched their ticket to this week's semifinals. Tonight, we covered three sites from around the state: Dalton, Marietta and Savannah.

The second round of the state high school basketball playoffs took place Tuesday on campuses around the state. For the most part, the favorites rolled. However, in Cherokee County, third-seeded Milton pulled another upset as they defeated No. 1 seed Etowah on their home floor. The Lady Eagles had upended No. 2 seed Parkview last week on the road.

From Savannah to the Tennessee line, we were all over the first round of the state basketball playoffs tonight. While there were some upsets - such as Redan and Savannah Christian going down - perennial powers like the Miller Grove boys and Wesleyan girls rolled past out-matched opponents.

High school soccer season kicks off with many familiar names atop the rankings. Perennial powers Starr’s Mill and Collins Hill are the teams to watch in all classifications. Both are defending champions, and bring back a ton of talent. The Panthers actually beat the Eagles 3-2 in the teams’ season opener.

The top boys basketball regular season concluded over the weekend. For top ranked teams in the AJC’s weekly poll, the games were much like a continuation of the pre-game lay-up drills. All of the top three teams in each classification retained their ranking from week six.

When the calendar turns to February, the machine that is the Norcross girls basketball team is usually clicking on all cylinders and charging full-speed ahead. But the Lady Blue Devils hit a speed bump over the weekend in Class 5A action against North Gwinnett.
