When the bell rang students back to Savannah's Beach High School this year, students and faculty came back to the news that the long-struggling school, filled with poor and at-risk students, now actually leads the district in some tests. That's a big change from just a few years ago when ambivalent students took failure for granted. Local school officials credit an influx of money and new leadership.

U.S. Airways is announcing daily flights between Savannah and Washington’s Reagan National Airport. The new flights will begin on March 25. U.S. Airways currently flies three times on weekends between the coastal city and the nation’s capital.

Organizers have set a new date in October to dedicate the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial after Hurricane Irene forced them to postpone the event in August, days before 250,000 people were expected to attend.

Governor Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed are scheduled to be in Washington Wednesday. The bipartisan duo will be lobbying for more funds for the Savannah harbor deepening project. President Obama's most recent budget included a only small sliver of the $100 million dollars port officials want.
