    A dozen Florida and Georgia border counties have signed an agreement making it easier for children removed from parents or guardians to be placed with relatives in the other state. The agreement among the 12 counties is expected to allow for such placements in as little as a week. It applies only to children removed because of abuse or neglect.

    Ware County fell to No. 10 in Class AAAA following its loss to Lowndes. I was tempted to take the Gators out altogether and throw in the Raiders of Mays, but Ware County’s schedule is a bit tougher than the Mays schedule to date.

    Officials are ordering evacuations of about 60 homes in Ware County as a wildfire has quickly spread across 8 square miles in a single day. Georgia Forestry Commission spokesman Eric Mosley says the evacuations were ordered Thursday after the blaze had burned more than 5,000 acres a few miles west of Waycross. Emergency officials say firefighters from surrounding communities have poured in to protect homes among the rural timberland that's fueling the wildfire.

    Firefighters have contained 55% of the massive blaze burning in the Okefenokee Swamp. Progress came quickly this week as wind, humidity and temperatures combined to allow crews to start controlled burns to corral the blaze. The fire has consumed the refuge's lower third.

    Environmental groups have formally asked the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to re-introduce panthers to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. If their idea is adopted, about a dozen endangered Florida panthers could be put in the swamp to start a new population there. They say, the cats' habitat in South Florida is diminishing.
