Construction crews have fenced off a historic dormitory at the University of Georgia to prepare for its demolition. University spokesman Tom Jackson said the demolition of 159-bed Rutherford Hall will probably begin in the first full week of June.

About 350,000 Georgia workers owe their jobs in some way to the Georgia ports. A report released by the University of Georgia says, 1-in-12 Georgia jobs is port-dependent. Critics say, the figures are inflated, counting every Wal-Mart greeter and store clerk as port-dependent since they work at a company that uses the ports.

A University of Georgia researcher has received a $1 million National Science Foundation grant to study the genetics of soybeans. The study will focus on investigating the function of soybean genes, particularly those that affect crop quality and yield.

Longtime University of Georgia President Michael Adams is retiring. Officials familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Adams will make a formal announcement Thursday at the UGA campus in Athens. The officials say he will retire in June 2013 after more than 15 years at the helm of the state's flagship university.

The University of Georgia will close the post office in the Tate Student Center as the volume of mail has declined in recent years. University officials said the post office will close permanently May 31 because the volume of mail on campus has declined by about 75 percent over the past decade.
