A State Senator from the Georgia coast on Monday announced plans to follow Jack Kingston into the U-S House. Buddy Carter of Pooler says he has the name recognition to get past what could become a crowded field of Republican candidates to run in the GOP-leaning 1st Congressional District. Kingston last week announced he's running for the US Senate, making his seat open for the first time in 20 years.

The man who shot a viral video showing the beach on Tybee Island littered with trash last year says he hopes that he won't be making a sequel this weekend. The video was shot after Orange Crush, an informally-arranged spring break mainly for African-American college students. This year's Orange Crush is Saturday.

Tybee Island city council members on Thursday instructed Police Chief Bob Bryson to do his best to remove the coyotes that began to appear on the island last year. To help in that effort, they approved the purchase of a $1,000 tranquilizer gun and a trap.

The city council on Tybee Island has repealed a ban on drinking alcohol on the beach, though they say the ban was rarely enforced. An amended ordinance also officially legalizes drinking on public streets, parking lots and sidewalks, which has also been historically permitted.

A Tybee Island hotel owner accused of having workers remove part of a sand dune has agreed to spend $10,000 to fund environmental education programs as part of a settlement with the state Department of Natural Resources.

Tourism officials on Georgia's coast say tax revenue indicates that Tybee Island experienced a record summer. Statistics from Visit Savannah show that bed tax revenue rose 8.2 percent for the months of June, July and August 2012 over the same period last year.

Tybee Island city council members are looking at ways to keep the coastal city dry as sea levels rise. The city this week held a three-day workshop about its options. Residents who attended were asked to prioritize their concerns about rising sea levels. Federal guages have documented a rise of about 10 inches at Fort Pulaski since 1935.
