A piece of artwork on display in downtown Macon has angered some African American pastors in Middle Georgia. They’re planning a protest this weekend outside the new Harriet Tubman Museum to make their point.
The new home of the Tubman African-American Museum will showoff a hybrid museum and cultural center. After a nine year delay, work on the Tubman African-American Museum in Macon is underway again. Museum director Andy Ambrose says the new building across from the Georgia Sports Hall of fame should be finished by the spring of next year. Once it is complete visitors will see a cultural attraction that stands up to the large museums in Atlanta.
A new Tubman African American Museum is expected to open by January 2015 after construction resumes late this year in Macon. Museum Director Andy Ambrose gave an update on the timeframe Thursday at a meeting of the Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority. Work on the Cherry Street property stopped in 2005 when the museum ran out of money.
The Tubman African American Museum in Macon paid tribute to Harriet Tubman's legacy Sunday with special tours, a reception and a re-enactment. An escaped slave herself, Tubman is credited with helping at least 300 slaves escape to the North using the network of safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.
