Gov. Nathan Deal added a new wrinkle to the state’s ethics conversation in his State of the State address Thursday. He said any new ethics rules should apply to all state and local elected officials in addition to General Assembly members.

Georgia would keep spending relatively flat under a $19.9 billion budget plan from Gov. Nathan Deal that tries some trims to health care spending while including limited infrastructure and education spending. That figure does not include billions in federal spending. The Republican governor is making a combination of spending cuts to close a funding shortfall in the Medicaid health care program for the poor.

If Governor Nathan Deal’s Eggs and Issues speech Wednesday is any indication much of his State of the State address Thursday will be a mix of good and bad news. Issue one is paying for Medicaid in the Peach State. During his Wednesday address to more than 2,000 members of Georgia's business and legislative community at the Georgia World Congress Center, Governor Deal rolled out cuts to the budget of the Department of Community Health.

Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal has launched the "Read Across Georgia" initiative to support Gov. Nathan Deal's goal of increasing the number of third-graders reading at grade level in the state. Sandra Deal will visit schools across the state this month to read to students.
