Governor Deal administered the oath of office Thursday to 37-year-old Keith Blackwell as the newest justice of the State Supreme Court. He will serve on the court until 2014, when voters will decide whether to keep him on the bench for a six-year term.
Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed Judge Keith Blackwell to the Georgia Supreme Court effective July 19. Blackwell will fill a seat left vacant by the pending departure of Justice George Carley, whose resignation becomes effective July 17.
The State Supreme Court has a new Chief Justice. George Carley was sworn in Tuesday in front of a packed courtroom that included six former Chief Justices. Justice George Carley is scheduled to retire from the State Supreme Court in seven weeks. He says he was shocked when Chief Justice Carol Hunstein decided to step aside to allow him to serve in the top job.
