Federal regulators have given Southern Company final approval to build two nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission vote means the nation's first new nuclear plant in three decades will be built south of Augusta. Environmental and consumer advocates are trying to halt construction.

Federal nuclear regulators are set to vote Thursday on approving construction of two new reactors at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission last year approved the design Southern Company is using to add two new reactors at its east Georgia facility. Now the commission is set to give its final OK for construction and operation.

Federal safety officials will vote Feb. 9 on whether to approve what could become the nation's first nuclear plant in a generation. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a hearing on the Atlanta-based Southern Co.'s request to build two new reactors at Plant Vogtle in eastern Georgia.

Nuclear power plant expansions are moving forward in the South while they are stalled or have been scrapped in other parts of the country. The South's politics have a lot to do with that trend. Lawmakers here prefer regulated markets and smooth the way for expensive new reactors.

The Longleaf Stewardship Fund announced a new partnership in Columbus Wednesday to preserve the pine tree in Georgia and other southeastern states. Through the Fund, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Southern Company and the Department of Defense and other government agencies are pooling resources to provide grants for environmental management efforts.

A typical Georgia Power customer will pay an extra 57 cents next year to finance the construction of a nuclear power plant, less than the utility earlier estimated. But customers will pay steeper-than-expected charges in the following years.

An underground pipe that leaked radioactive water has been sealed off underneath a nuclear power plant in Georgia. Southern Co. officials say that covers have been welded onto the ends of the faulty pipe below Plant Hatch in Baxley. The company learned of the leak last month when it detected abnormal amounts of tritium, a radioactive form of hydrogen, in test wells at the plant. Geter said there are no signs that the radioactive water has moved off the property.

A new factory that makes parts for wind turbines opened in north Georgia Tuesday. Although the state has no large-scale wind project of its own, it's capitalizing on the manufacturing end of renewable energy production.
