Officials recently certified a new device that helps endangered sea turtles escape from shrimp nets. The device satisfies conservation groups that want to protect sea turtles. Shrimpers don't like having to shift through bycatch or throw-away sea creatures that end up in their nets.

The state's Department of Natural Resources says Georgia's waters are will open for commercial and recreational harvest of food shrimp on May 30 at 6 a.m.

Authorities in Brunswick, who have been trying to figure out what to do about sinking shrimp boats, are seeking a state grant to raise one such boat and make improvements to the city dock. The Florida Times-Union reports the city would match the $50,000 grant if approved.
