Gov. Nathan Deal says he's willing to spend state money upfront to start deepening Savannah's busy shipping channel as long as the federal government promises to pay its share of the $652 million project later. Deal told reporters Tuesday during a stop in Savannah the state has $231 million set aside for the Savannah harbor expansion and "we're ready to spend it."

Savannah is making an extra effort to recycle items typically thrown away every year by college students leaving the city for summer break. At the end of May, the city plans to partner with the Savannah College of Art and Design, as well as Goodwill and Keep Savannah Beautiful, to keep the usual piles couches, microwave ovens and other goods from going straight to the landfill.

State labor officials reported an 8.2% April jobless rate. That's down 0.2% from March and a full point from April of last year. The hospitality industry led the growth with a monthly gain of 10,000 jobs.

Hundreds of children and adults are expected to take part in Savannah's Youth Summit 2013, which brings together young people to discuss community issues. The Youth Summit gathers local residents between the ages of 11 and 20 for a conference Monday evening at the Savannah Civic Center.

Three Savannah non-profits are joining forces to promote heritage tourism in an off-the-beaten-path part of Chatham County. The Pin Point Heritage Museum, Bethesda Academy and Ossabaw Island Foundation announced a partnership on Friday to share expertise and resources.
