The long-awaited Savannah Harbor deepening can move forward, now that officials with the Georgia Ports Authority, state transportation department, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have signed a key agreement.

This session, lawmakers are too eager this year to adjourn and start campaigning for re-election to poke around into anything too controversial. But the outside world keeps intruding at the Gold Dome. Last month, it was severe winter weather. This month, it’s a lack of federal funding for the Savannah Harbor deepening project.

If there can be said to be a front-runner in the GOP primary for Georgia’s open U.S. Senate seat, it might be Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Savannah). The 11-term congressman has so far raised the most money in the race to replace retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss. In an interview with GPB in late December, Kingston called himself the “consensus conservative” in the race.

Gov. Nathan Deal of Georgia will host South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley Wednesday in Hartwell, Ga., near the South Carolina border. The governors and lawmakers from South Carolina and Georgia are meeting on water management issues in the Savannah River basin.

Vice President Joe Biden brought a sense of urgency to Savannah on Monday. The Vice President was in the coastal city to push for Congressional funding for the $600 million Savannah Harbor Expansion Project. Georgia has been seeking to deepen the harbor for 17 years.

A bill introduced this week in Congress had Georgia port officials feeling confident at its annual State of the Ports luncheon Thursday. That’s because the legislation would nix a 1999 spending cap on the Savannah Harbor deepening project.

US Army Under Secretary Joseph Westfal became the latest Obama administration official to voice support for a plan to deepen the port of Savannah yesterday. Westfal toured the port on a two-day trip to the the Georgia coast.

A Georgia congressman says he expects the U.S. House to take action this fall to eliminate a bureaucratic obstacle to deepening the shipping channel to the Port of Savannah. Democratic Rep. John Barrow of Augusta visited the port Wednesday and said he expects a committee to take up a bill removing the barrier by early October.
