Georgia Rep. Sanford Bishop has created a legal expense fund. Trustee Amy Gilbert filed paperwork on April 1 to create the "Sanford Bishop Legal Expense Trust." Gilbert referred inquiries to Bishop's office, which did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Georgia U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop and 16 of his colleagues have re-formed the “peanut caucus” in the new Congress. It’s an effort to protect the peanut industry in Washington, especially with debate coming on a new farm bill.

John House has been elected the Republican nominee to challenge Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop in west Georgia. House, a consultant from Midland, defeated Columbus medical supplies executive Rick Allen in a runoff election Tuesday to win the GOP nomination in the 2nd Congressional District.

Georgia sends $1.1 billion in exports to Columbia, Korea and Panama. Republicans and some business groups say, those exports stand to rise now that Congress has approved trade deals lowering tariffs on the nations. Georgia chemicals, machines and transportation equipment are among the items that could be the most boosted by lower tariffs. But some labor unions are skeptical.

Advocacy groups not affiliated with a political party have pumped money into some Georgia races this year. The fact that their donors are hidden bothers advocacy groups. Georgia’s hotly contested 2nd and 8th Congressional districts are the recipients of most of the non party affiliated money.
