Official election results show Republican congressional candidate Lee Anderson has defeated a GOP primary opponent by just 159 votes in their runoff election two weeks ago. State election officials certified the vote count Tuesday for the runoff in east Georgia's 12th Congressional District.

Republican voters in Georgia's 12th Congressional District gave another late night to candidates hoping to defeat incumbent John Barrow in the fall. With all but absentee votes counted, the race is still too close call. Grovetown State Representative Lee Anderson led Augusta businessman Rick Allen at the end of the night by just 153 votes.

Congressional candidate Wright McLeod wants last week's election results tallied again. The former Naval officer fell 584 votes shy of making it into a GOP run-off in Georgia's 12th District. McLeod asked for a recount Wednesday, a day after Secretary of State Brian Kemp's office certified the results.

Two Republican congressional candidates battling for runner-up status in Georgia's 12th District are too close to determine which one will advance to a runoff next month. Unofficial returns late Tuesday showed Augusta businessman Rick Allen ahead of attorney Wright McLeod by just 570 votes. The margin was thin enough to guarantee McLeod a recount if he requests one.
