The University of Georgia will close the post office in the Tate Student Center as the volume of mail has declined in recent years. University officials said the post office will close permanently May 31 because the volume of mail on campus has declined by about 75 percent over the past decade.

“Snail mail” in Georgia is about to get slower. The U.S. Postal Service confirmed Thursday its plan to close more than 220 mail processing center across the United States, including eight in Georgia.

Postal workers at a south Georgia distribution center are expected to learn the fate of their jobs next week. The Albany Herald reports that Assistant Dougherty County Manager Mike McCoy participated in a meeting with the U.S. postmaster general recently, and learned that notification of workers in Albany is expected on Feb. 23.
