    Georgia's seaport in coastal Brunswick has moved its first shipment of American-made Toyota vehicles being exported overseas. The Georgia Ports Authority says a cargo ship loaded with Toyota Venzas set sail Thursday from Brunswick for markets in Russia and the Ukraine.

    Toyota has chosen the Port of Brunswick to export its U.S.-made Venza vehicles to eastern Europe. The Georgia Ports Authority says Toyota plans to ship about 5,000 of the vehicles each year through Brunswick to Russia and Ukraine.

    The Georgia Ports Authority says the state’s shipping terminals in Savannah and Brunswick are off to a promising start in the new fiscal year that started July 1. Overall tonnage of cargo moving through Savannah and Brunswick was up 5.6 percent to more than 4.5 million tons of imports and exports during the same two months.

    The Georgia Ports Authority said Thursday business was up across the board last month at its shipping terminals in Savannah and Brunswick. The state agency said the ports moved 13 percent more cargo from the same month a year ago.

    Georgia Port Authority officials are reporting record tonnage numbers for the fiscal year that ended in June. Total non-containerized cargo jumped about 16% from the previous fiscal year. The dock at Colonel's Island reported a 19% growth in auto and machinery traffic.

    About 350,000 Georgia workers owe their jobs in some way to the Georgia ports. A report released by the University of Georgia says, 1-in-12 Georgia jobs is port-dependent. Critics say, the figures are inflated, counting every Wal-Mart greeter and store clerk as port-dependent since they work at a company that uses the ports.

    State officials say the ports of Savannah and Brunswick experienced record volumes during 2011. Georgia Ports Authority released figures showing, the ports handled 26.1 million tons of cargo, a 4.3% increase over the previous year. In Savannah, the Authority handled a record 2.95 million containers, a 3.5% increase over 2010.

    Georgia ports officials are asking state lawmakers for $46 million for Savannah harbor deepening in the upcoming legislative session. But it's not the only item they'll be following. Georgia Ports Authority also is interested in the results of a year-long initiative to re-write laws affecting businesses.

    Georgia Ports Authority has signed an agreement with a Canadian firm to upgrade the Port of Brunswick. The Logistec Corporation will spend $5 million to deepen container berths and improve the facility that handles wood pellets. Ports spokesman Robert Morris says, the Brunswick port is close to customers making and exporting wood pellets from the heart of Georgia's timber land.
