The second week of the full slate of high school football games did not disappoint. Chattahoochee looked to get their season off on the right foot, but Lambert spoiled their season opener with a convincing win on the Cougars' home turf.

The final game of the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic featured two teams that have never played against each other. Walton and Peachtree Ridge did battle in the night cap game at the Georgia Dome and Walton was able to come away with a 26-14 victory.

For the second year in a row, it will be county against county in the Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic. In fact, the same eight power programs from last year’s Classic will take part in this year’s event as well

Tonight in the first round of the state basketball playoffs, Walton, Berkmar and Campbell all went down tonight in boys playoff action. Rivalry games tend to bring out the best in sports. And tonight's Region 7-5A semifinal between Gwinnett County neighbors North Gwinnett and Peachtree Ridge was no exception. After nine lead changes and a blur of late fouls in a game webcasted on GPB.org, the No. 2 Lions defeated the No. 7 Bulldogs 57-53 at Mill Creek.

The GHSA state basketball tournaments don’t start until next weekend, but thanks to this week’s region playoffs, many metro Atlanta teams will teams will be battle tested. The best basketball in the state is played close to the capitol, which means some talent-rich local teams will have to fight for a coveted invitation to the state’s big dance.

As the top boys basketball teams in the state make their playoff pushes, teams from the metro area continue to dominate in the AJC’s weekly polls, especially in the larger classifications. Every No. 1 team (with the exception of Class A) is inside or within shouting distance of I-285.

These 10 games feature some of the best matchups in the state this weekend. Georgia commitment Nick Marshall leads Class A No. 2 Wilcox County in a huge game at No. 4 Clinch County. Buford will look to rebound after a rare loss, while Lovett hosts No. 9 Callaway in Class AA. Woodstock and Kell meet in an interesting inter-classification matchup between two ranked teams and Peachtree Ridge travels to Newnan for a top 5 matchup in the state's highest classification.
