Federal regulators have given Southern Company final approval to build two nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission vote means the nation's first new nuclear plant in three decades will be built south of Augusta. Environmental and consumer advocates are trying to halt construction.

Federal nuclear regulators are set to vote Thursday on approving construction of two new reactors at Plant Vogtle near Waynesboro. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission last year approved the design Southern Company is using to add two new reactors at its east Georgia facility. Now the commission is set to give its final OK for construction and operation.

Federal safety officials will vote Feb. 9 on whether to approve what could become the nation's first nuclear plant in a generation. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a hearing on the Atlanta-based Southern Co.'s request to build two new reactors at Plant Vogtle in eastern Georgia.

Nuclear power plant expansions are moving forward in the South while they are stalled or have been scrapped in other parts of the country. The South's politics have a lot to do with that trend. Lawmakers here prefer regulated markets and smooth the way for expensive new reactors.

The country's top nuclear safety regulator warned the industry against complacency and said it must resolve several long-running issues, including fire protection and a new analysis of earthquake risks. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko told power company executives Thursday that two proposed nuclear reactors in Georgia and several others are under increased scrutiny because of safety problems.

Staffers at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission say they believe the new nuclear reactors to be built at Plant Vogtle are safe. Approval of the Westinghouse AP1000 design sets the stage for final commission approval.

Georgia’s nuclear plants one day could have more options for disposing the tons of spent reactor fuel they create. Federal regulators are considering letting private companies recycle the fuel.

Westinghouse Electric Co. has submitted revisions to the proposed design of a new nuclear reactor after the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission raised concerns last month. NRC officials said last month that Westinghouse incorrectly modeled the potential stresses on several pieces of safety related equipment, including the concrete-and-steel shield building that protects the reactor.

A Republican-led house committee says the Obama administration had no scientific basis for closing Nevada’s Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. U.S. Congressman Paul Broun Wednesday discussed the findings with nuclear industry officials in Augusta.
