The top boys basketball regular season concluded over the weekend. For top ranked teams in the AJC’s weekly poll, the games were much like a continuation of the pre-game lay-up drills. All of the top three teams in each classification retained their ranking from week six.

When the calendar turns to February, the machine that is the Norcross girls basketball team is usually clicking on all cylinders and charging full-speed ahead. But the Lady Blue Devils hit a speed bump over the weekend in Class 5A action against North Gwinnett.

As the clock on the high school basketball regular season ticks down to double-zero, the top boys teams are gaining momentum. Milton, the AJC’s top-ranked team in Class 5A, won twice last week in region games by a gaudy average of 51 points.

The craziness in Georgia girls basketball is settling down, just as region and state tournaments are about to commence. Last week, we saw three new teams ascend to the top spot of the AJC’s weekly poll. This week, all five of the No. 1’s remain in the pole position.

If local fans of girls prep basketball were hungry last week, surely they enjoyed a few sweet pieces of upside-down cake. In just one week, three local girls teams fell from the top spot in the AJC’s rankings.

In Class 5A, Norcross lost its first game of the season and was replaced by Hillgrove at the top. The Lady Blue Devils defeated defending Alabama 6A state champion Hoover in an interesting matchup of the two states' reigning stte champs. But Norcross fell on Tuesday to North Gwinnett, which caused their fall in the rankings this week.

Norcross High School hosted the third annual Marriott Invitational where some of the best basketball teams in Georgia showcased their talent to the rest of the country. The last game of the event took place on Saturday, as Milton, the top-ranked team in Class 5A, squared off against Rainier Beach, one of the premier programs in Seattle, Wash.

Every winter it has become tradition for many of metro Atlanta’s top high school basketball teams to load their I-pods and pack travel bags to play in elite national tournaments. But last week, some of the area’s premier teams simply headed to Centennial High in Roswell for "Hoops in Overdrive".
