Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley met on the Savannah River on Wednesday. The two executives and a host of officials from both states met to discuss water issues. But the only agreement to come from the meeting concerns drought.
An 8-mile-long strip of land on South Georgia's Altamaha River soon could be open to the public. The Nature Conservancy has bought a 6,000 acre tract known as Boyles Island in Wayne County. The $8 million-dollar purchase from timber giant Rayonier is expected to become a $4 million sale to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The Nature Conservancy has bought more than a thousand acres of fire-scorched land and donated it to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The land is on the refuge's northwest edge, where wildfires burned a half million acres in 2007.
