    Black leaders in Georgia are claiming the creation of several cities around Atlanta essentially fences out black voters and creates white majorities. They say that violates the federal Voting Rights Act and they’ve sued the governor to get the cities dissolved.

    In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Shannon Scott of Milton High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Scott is the first Gatorade Georgia Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Milton High School.

    The final hoops rankings are out and, as you might've guessed, the No. 1 teams are all state champs. While the chalk (or favorites) ruled much of the weekend, Norcross pulled off one of the biggest upsets in state finals history by beating goliath Milton in the Class 5A boys final.

After being eliminated by Milton in last year’s Class 5A quarterfinals in a controversial ending, the Blue Devils had a shot Friday night to even the score. And they did with a shocking 59-55 upset of the state’s No. 1 team.

    The rich got richer. The Milton Eagles, 2010 Class AAAAA boys champion, returned nearly all of their roster intact, having lost zero seniors, and even added a huge piece off the bench to give the Milton faithful hope of a mythical national championship.

    In eight semifinal games played on Thursday in Macon and Gwinnett, the winner of each game calls metro Atlanta home. Meanwhile, six teams from outside the metro area saw their seasons come to an end. In Class AA, Buford and GAC flexed their hoops muscles as each school qualified boys and girls teams into the finals.

    The second round of the state high school basketball playoffs took place Tuesday on campuses around the state. For the most part, the favorites rolled. However, in Cherokee County, third-seeded Milton pulled another upset as they defeated No. 1 seed Etowah on their home floor. The Lady Eagles had upended No. 2 seed Parkview last week on the road.
