Central State Hospital in Milledgeville is closing its developmental disabilities unit at the end of June. Just 16 patients remain. State is moving towards community-based care for the disabled.

Georgia's home-grown liquor industry is getting a new player. Officials at Milledgeville-based Georgia Distilling Company say, they now have federal and local permits and soon expect their state permit to begin operation. A company official says, the state permit follows the federal and local ones, so he's planning on opening in two months.

A private prison broke ground Monday in middle Georgia. The 1,000-bed facility in Milledgeville is expected to employ 235 people when it opens in 2012.
