Wells Fargo has announced plans to hire 200 new employees in the metro Atlanta region. The San Francisco-based bank is hiring new workers as part of a broader hiring push for more mortgage bankers, small business lenders, loan underwriters and financial advisers throughout the East Coast.

State health officials say the number of people hospitalized with flu symptoms in metro Atlanta has soared in recent weeks, the latest sign of a widespread flu outbreak. The Georgia Department of Public Health reports that 244 people were hospitalized during a recent four-week period in metro Atlanta.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is hinting he has plans for a higher office. The mayor elected four years ago is seeking his second term in City Hall this year. But Morris News Service reports he said at a luncheon this week he also has "other plans" after finishing as mayor.

The cost to use interstate toll roads in metro Atlanta, which has been steadily rising in recent months, has hit a new record. WSB-TV reports that motorists during Friday morning's rush hour paid a record $6.35 to use the lanes.

The 10-county metro Atlanta region added 37,200 residents from April 2011 to April 2012, a reflection of the births, according to researchers. Before the recession struck, the region routinely added more than 100,000 people each year as newcomers flooded into the metro area.

About 350,000 Georgia workers owe their jobs in some way to the Georgia ports. A report released by the University of Georgia says, 1-in-12 Georgia jobs is port-dependent. Critics say, the figures are inflated, counting every Wal-Mart greeter and store clerk as port-dependent since they work at a company that uses the ports.

State labor officials say the preliminary unemployment rate in metro Atlanta dropped to 8.7 percent in March. The new jobless rate was announced early Thursday morning by the Georgia Department of Labor. Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate is down from a year ago, when it was 9.6 percent

An outgoing member of Georgia's Department of Natural Resources board is taking aim at Governor Nathan Deal. Deal chose not to re-appoint Newnan insurance agent Warren Budd to another term on the board overseeing environmental protection. Budd says, insiders told him it's because he's in synch with environmental groups on some issues.
