State Rep. Matt Ramsey has introduced legislation that would require school system to have at least two personnel trained in diabetes treatment. The Peachtree City Republican says he became aware of the issue last year after his child was diagnosed with Type I diabetes.

This week, controversy flared over a Governor Deal appointment to the state’s new immigration enforcement panel. And there are concerns from some over how the panel will go about its business. A portion of Georgia’s new immigration law creates the Immigration Enforcement Review Board—a seven member panel appointed by state elected officials.

Thousands of people gathered in front of the Georgia state Capitol Thursday to protest proposed immigration laws. They waved signs, chanted and cheered as speakers addressed the crowd. Police estimated the crowd at roughly 5,000.

State Rep. Matt Ramsey told his House colleagues that a bill he sponsored is necessary to crack down on the employment of illegal immigrants in Georgia. Several other Republican lawmakers also spoke Thursday on the floor of the House in support of the bill, saying the state must act because the federal government has failed to stop illegal immigration.

A proposed Georgia law to crack down on illegal immigration that mirrors some provisions in Arizona’s controversial law is set for a hearing today.
