Officials in Savannah's Chatham County hope a mediator will resolve negotiations over how to split up a local sales tax. The county and its seven municipalities have until August 12th to agree on a formula to split up its 1% Local Option Sales Tax. At issue is about $600 million in potential tax revenue.

Cities and counties are renegotiating the terms of a tax that almost every Georgian pays. All but a handful of Georgia counties have a penny sales tax called LOST. It goes into city and county budgets to offset property taxes. But every ten years, cities and counties have to renegotiate how the taxes are split up based on new Census data.

The United States Specialty Sports Association will bring a 48-team Florida-Georgia Showdown to Valdosta next April. The weekend tournament will feature the best traveling teams for kids from the two states aged 9 to 14. With 12 to 20 players on each team, that usually means at least 10 hotel rooms per team, said tournament officials.

Three of the state's four legislative special elections Tuesday are headed to a runoff, with no candidate in those districts getting a majority of the votes needed to win. Meanwhile, Valdosta voters decided not to merge their school system with the county, and Bibb voters passed their SPLOST.

Savannah's Chatham County is having a record year for mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus. So far this year, the county has collected 67 mosquitoes with the virus. Health officials there say, one person has a possible case of West Nile. And the bug season isn't even over.

After decades of discussion, people in south Georgia’s Lowndes County will vote in November whether to unify the Valdosta and Lowndes county school systems. A group called Community Unification for Education Excellence or CUEE has petitioned enough signatures to vote on whether to rescind the Valdosta City Schools charter. That would bring it under the Lowndes County system.
