Musician Little Richard Penniman received an honorary degree from Mercer University in his hometown of Macon, the same weekend he learned that his boyhood home there will be preserved.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is moving to purchase and preserve the boyhood home of rock n' roll pioneer "Little Richard" Penniman in Macon, one of dozens of properties GDOT is buying up to make way for the widening of Interstate 75.

The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to spend about $10 million to mitigate the impact of widening Interstate 75 in Macon. Those plans include buying the small two-bedroom home where Little Richard's family lived and moving it four blocks.
