The federal Food and Drug Administration has put Georgia’s cantaloupe growers on notice that inspectors will be checking out packing operations when they begin in a few weeks. The agency is concerned about recent outbreaks of listeria and salmonella in the melons. So inspectors will visit a sample of facilities looking for any unsanitary conditions.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says ricotta cheese tainted with listeria bacteria is linked to 14 illnesses and at least one death.

Dole Food is recalling more than 1,000 cases of bagged salads sold at Kroger and Wal-Mart stores in six states because of the possibility of listeria contamination. The affected states are Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. No illnesses have been reported.

A company in Lawrenceville that supplies foods for some retail outlets has recalled numerous products, including sandwiches, parfaits, wraps, plates and salads, because of potential listeria contamination. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Lawrenceville operation of Chicago-based Flying Foods Group's recall is an expansion of one that began on July 19. The expanded recall includes products made for Core-Mark Atlanta Division, RaceTrac and Starbucks. Core-Mark Atlanta Division products were distributed to outlets in Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

U.S. Department of Agriculture officials say Flying Food Group LLC is recalling about 204 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken wraps and plates that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Products subject to recall are 8.4-ounce packages of "Starbucks Chipotle Chicken Wraps Bistro Box"; and 6.3-ounce packages of "Starbucks Chicken & Hummus Bistro Box."

A federal agency says 380,000 pounds of possibly tainted deli meat products sold in sandwiches at Wal-Mart stores have been recalled by a food company in Buffalo. The Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service says Tuesday that roast beef and ham distributed to Wal-Mart delicatessens might be contaminated with Listeria bacteria. A retail sample collected in Georgia tested positive for Listeria.
