State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler has announced the Georgia Department of Labor will offer assistance to workers who are temporarily out of a job or have been laid off in the wake of Wednesday's storm. Butler says the department of labor's Cartersville Career Center will set up two temporary assistance centers in Adairsville between Feb. 5 and 14.

Georgia’s jobless rate inched upward in June, the first time it’s increased in nearly a year. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9 percent, up a tenth of a point from May.

Georgia’s unemployment rate stayed the same between April and May, holding at 8.9 percent. Labor officials said it’s the first time in 10 months the rate has not fallen.

Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has fallen below 9 percent for the first time in more than three years. The jobless rate declined for the ninth consecutive month in April to 8.9 percent.

Workers will still file unemployment claims as they have been. But with a new electronic system, the labor department will send an email to registered businesses when a worker files an unemployment claim. Then, companies can log in to a website to contest claims or explain why they let workers go.

Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday morning the state's February seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined for the seventh consecutive month to 9.1 percent. That's the lowest rate since March 2009. It’s also a drop of 0.1 percent from January.
