After six years of planning and 18 months of construction, Jekyll Island's new convention center is opening to the public that paid for it. The 128,000-square-foot convention facility opened Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of groups are already booking meetings at Jekyll Island's new convention center, though the doors won't open for another two months. The island's staff is working to win back groups that moved their annual gatherings from Jekyll to other resorts in places like Florida.

Governor Nathan Deal is planning a firsthand look at progress on a key piece of Jekyll Island's tourism makeover. Deal is scheduled to take a hard-hat tour Monday of the construction site at the new Jekyll Island convention center. Officials at the state park say work on the 128,000-square-foot building is about half done.
