South Carolina ports officials are walking away from a proposed port project with Georgia for the second time this year. The fight over the planned jointly-run Jasper Ocean Terminal on the Savannah River comes as federal funding for Savannah harbor deepening looks more likely. A Georgia official calls new South Carolina demands "a game."

Officials working to build a jointly-run Georgia and South Carolina port on the Savannah River will spend the next year looking at what to do with the river's sediment. The dredged clay will come from the bottom of the Savannah River and will be put on the river's South Carolina bank where officials want to build the shared port.

A member of the South Carolina state ports authority board is urging people not to read too much into a new pair of political appointments. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley recently appointed two new members. Neither of them are from the Beaufort area, near Savannah.

Georgia and South Carolina are slowing down their effort to develop a jointly-run seaport near Savannah. The two states' ports officials met to air grievances with one another over a proposed Jasper Ocean Terminal. Both sides said that the meeting of the so-called Joint Project Office was productive.

South Carolina officials will be at a bi-state meeting this week about the Jasper Ocean Terminal. That's the proposed jointly-run seaport on South Carolina's side of the Savannah River. South Carolina officials had threatened to walk away from talks, saying issues around Savannah's harbor deepening project were a threat to the cross-state effort.

South Carolina officials are taking aim again at the proposal to deepen the Savannah harbor. This time, their criticism deals with how harbor deepening will affect plans to build a new port on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River. South Carolina lawmakers say, the site of the proposed port will be used as a place to dump river-bottom material.

Savannah harbor deepening is first and foremost among legislative concerns for Georgia's coastal delegation. But there's another port-related project coming up behind harbor deepening that supporters hope lawmakers take up. It's a new Savannah River seaport that is to be jointly run with South Carolina in that state's Jasper County.

A consultant working on a joint port project being developed by the states of Georgia and South Carolina says, it could be just two years before the port seeks its permits. The consultant also says, the Jasper Ocean Terminal, on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River, could be up an running by 2025.
