General aviation industry officials say, 7,000 Georgians go to work everyday in their industry -- and that should be good reason to keep a tax break in place for the wealthy customers who buy private airplanes. Current federal budget negotiations have opened a torrent of criticism toward what some -- including President Obama -- characterize as a tax loophole for fat cats.

A Chinese aviation leasing company has announced a deal with Gulfstream Aerospace to buy 50 high-end business jets for more than $2.5 billion. Gulfstream spokesman Jeff Miller has confirmed the deal with Minsheng Banking Corp. The deal is expected to be converted into firm orders over the next three to five years.

U.S. Army Corp of Engineers officials have given their approval for an 890-acre expansion at the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport. The project will allow the airport to make several improvements -- including building a new taxiway and a tunnel for traffic to flow underneath a taxiway. But it also will allow Gulfstream Aerospace to expand their headquarters.

A bill on its way to the governor's desk extends a sales tax exemption on airplane parts. But an amendment to the measure also gives tax breaks to developers of malls, amusement parks and resorts. Some economists say that's a waste of taxpayer money.

Georgia exports rose to an all-time high of $28 billion last year. The US Census recently released information about the value of the nation's international trade. The numbers show Georgia's top exports are wood pulp, poultry, kaolin and carpet. Top destinations are Brazil, Mexico and China.

Governor Sonny Perdue has announced which rural areas are getting funds from this year's tobacco settlement money. And the big winner isn't rural at all. Metro Savannah gets the largest award in this year's grants from the One Georgia Authority. The grant will help Gulfstream Aerospace build a new facility that's designed to add 1,000 new jobs.

Gulfstream Aerospace has announced a major new expansion that will create more than 1,000 new jobs. A seven-year, $500 million plan represents a bright spot in Georgia's recession-wracked economy. Company officials say, many of the jobs will be at its Savannah headquarters in areas like production engineering and technical support staff.

Savannah is out-performing the rest of the state when it comes to job and salary growth. A California-based think tank puts the coastal city No.1 in Georgia and 40th nationally for best-performing cities, economically. The ranking by the Milken Institute relies heavily on job and salary growth in the high-tech sector.
