Three university of Georgia scientists have received a three-year grant to study the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. The grant will allow scientists and emergency responders to better predict and respond to future spills if they occur.

Georgia environmental groups are praising a decision by the Obama administration to reverse itself on offshore oil. Back in March, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said the administration would open up the East Coast to offshore drilling. Now -- after the Gulf oil spill -- Salazar says, the administration will NOT persue Atlantic oil.

A researcher at the University of Georgia is studying the effects of the gulf oil spill on native plant species along the Louisiana coast. The findings could help restore plants to the oil fouled marshes and bayous.

The 72 pelicans were spotted covered in oil from the Deep Horizon spill in April. They were treated and flown to Georgia because biologists believe, they'll have a better chance of making it here.
