Tonight’s “Two for Tuesday” webcast on GPB.org features a rivalry matchup between schools from Region 6A-AA when the boys and girls teams of the Buford Wolves travel to clash against the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans. Both games feature schools that are currently No. 1 and 2 in the Region 6A-AA standings. The Buford girls are No. 3 in the state with a perfect record of 6-0 in region play (17-2 overall). The Buford boys team is having also having a fine season and are currently tied with Decatur for second place in the region with a record of 4-2 (14-5 overall). For the girls and boys teams of GAC, it is just the opposite. The boys are No. 1 in the region with a perfect 7-0 record (17-5 overall). The Lady Spartans at 6-1 (16-6 overall) have only one blemish on their region record this season, putting them just behind the Buford girls for top spot in the region. The Lady Wolves and Lady Spartans will get the evening started with a scheduled start time of 5:45. Greater Atlanta Christian currently leads the region with an average of 62 points per game, while only allowing 36. The Lady Spartans are led by their sophomore sensation, Kristina Nelson. Nelson is averaging 15.4 points per game in 15 appearances to go with 6.2 boards a contest. The Lady Spartans are young with just five of their 13 players being upperclassmen. The Buford girls team also puts points up in bunches and are ranked second behind the Lady Spartans averaging 55 points per contest. Buford is also a much more experienced team than is GAC. They have no freshmen on the varsity squad and seven of their 13 players are upperclassmen, including five seniors on the team. Like the Lady Spartans, the Buford girls are led by a young, outstanding sophomore, Kaela Davis. The shooting guard is averaging 17.5 points a game in 13 appearances this season. Junior point guard Andraya Carter also chips with in 12.6 points. Buford’s defense is holding their opponents to only 30 points per game, the least amount of points giving up by any team in Region 6A-AA. It should be an interesting matchup with the region’s top two offenses and defenses going head-to-head. In the boys matchup, GAC and Buford are nearly identical. Both defenses are giving up 49 points a contest, while the Spartans have a slight edge on the Wolves for points scored per game, 65 to 62. GAC’s main threat is senior Malcolm Brogdon. Brogdon, a member of Score 44, is averaging a double-double this season from the wing position with 25.5 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Helping out Brogdon on the offensive end and on the boards is sophomore forward A.J. Davis, who is putting up 11.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. For the Buford boys team, strong performances from junior point guard Kyle Kellam and junior center T.J. Shipes will be needed if the Wolves want to leave GAC with a win. GAC will be rocking next Tuesday night with two undefeated streaks on the line. Can the Lady Spartans bring an end to the Lady Wolves perfect record in region play? Will the Great Atlanta Christian boys defend their home court and keep their run at perfection in the region alive?
