Georgia will no longer be a haven for pain clinics that authorities say are fronts for illegal distribution of prescription pain medication. Gov. Nathan Deal has signed into law new regulations that require all pain clinics to get licenses from the state medical board. The new law also tightens regulations of the physicians who own and work in the clinics.

A food processing and distribution company is planning to expand a plant in western Georgia and looks to create 750 new jobs. Gov. Nathan Deal Thursday announced Koch Foods is planning to expand its plant in Hamilton — about 25 miles northeast of Columbus.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he will sign an executive order to suspend six of nine DeKalb County School Board members. Deal made the announcement Monday although federal judge issued an order temporarily preventing him from replacing board members until after a hearing on Friday.

If Governor Nathan Deal’s Eggs and Issues speech Wednesday is any indication much of his State of the State address Thursday will be a mix of good and bad news. Issue one is paying for Medicaid in the Peach State. During his Wednesday address to more than 2,000 members of Georgia's business and legislative community at the Georgia World Congress Center, Governor Deal rolled out cuts to the budget of the Department of Community Health.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston say they'll support a plan to replace a hospital "bed tax" with assessments coming from a state agency. The legislative leaders made their endorsements at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce's annual "Eggs and Issues" breakfast. The meal is typically used by the Governor and leaders to announce parts of their agendas.

A spokesman for Gov. Nathan Deal says the governor is proposing a plan that would allow lawmakers to avoid an explicit vote on whether to extend an expiring hospital industry tax that helps finance Georgia's health care system.

Experts say Georgia is running out of time to implement its own health insurance marketplace. States have until Nov. 16 to say whether they will build their own health insurance exchanges or leave it to the federal government under the new health care law.

Gov. Nathan Deal is asking state agencies to find another $553 million in reductions through June 2014. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that about half of that would come from higher education and from public health — $108 million from the University System of Georgia and $170 million from the Department of Community Health — while most k-12 school funding is exempt.
