New rules for dogs on St. Simons Island are drawing both cheers and jeers from dog lovers. On the one hand, Glynn County officials are banning dogs on the island's beach this summer when the sand is most popular, during the day. On the other hand, they're giving dog owners the discretion to unleash their dogs and let them roam free in the mornings and evenings.

The Department of Natural Resources started using a helicopter Thursday to lower pallets of oyster shells in Glynn County tidal creeks that once teemed with the bivalve mollusks. The recycled oyster shells will become a foundation where oyster larvae can attach themselves and form living reefs.

Glynn County Commission spokeswoman Candice Temple says the agency recently issued a certificate declaring the site ready for commercial and industrial use and as a detention facility.

Georgia’s Department of Transportation issued an enhancement grant to Glynn County. The quarter-million-dollar grant will go towards restoring the keeper’s dwelling at St. Simons Island Lighthouse.

A dozen Florida and Georgia border counties have signed an agreement making it easier for children removed from parents or guardians to be placed with relatives in the other state. The agreement among the 12 counties is expected to allow for such placements in as little as a week. It applies only to children removed because of abuse or neglect.

Brunswick city officials are getting tired of paying to raise sunken and abandoned shrimp boats. Two years after paying about $70,000 to raise a derelict trawler at the city dock, last month another one sank. Taxpayers end up footing the bill when shrimpers can't maintain their boats and can't insure or sell them.

A Southeast Georgia judge accused of misconduct is resigning. Glynn County Superior Court Judge Amanda Williams ran the state's largest drug court but came under investigation for tyrannical behavior. The state's judicial watchdog agency accused the judge of jailing inmates indefinitely, giving preferential treatment and violating her oath of office.

The state's judicial watchdog agency has filed new charges against the judge who oversaw the state's largest drug court. The Judicial Qualifications Commission accuses Glynn County Superior Court Judge Amanda Williams of showing favoritism and conflict of interest. One of her political opponents says, the new charges aren't surprising.

An official with a mining company says it's exploring in southeast Georgia's Brantley and Charlton counties for the mineral zircon and could eventually turn its attention to Glynn County. The company says mining in Brantley and Charlton counties could create 45 jobs, with a $15 million annual impact for five to 10 years.

A powerful Georgia judge is being charged with ethical misconduct by a state agency that says she abused her power by mistreating drug court defendants, particularly those she ordered jailed for indefinite periods. Superior Court Judge Amanda F. Williams is the chief judge of the Brunswick Judicial Circuit.
