The mayor of Columbus says, she's forming a commission to push for regional passenger rail service to the west Georgia city. Mayor Teresa Tomlinson has put several community and business leaders on the commission. She hopes the panel will help efforts to build a Columbus to Atlanta rail link, one of city leaders' top priorities.
Columbus leaders do not want to be left out of Georgia’s passenger rail discussion. So Mayor Teresa Tomlinson is creating a Mayor’s Commission on Passenger Rail to make sure Columbus is not forgotten. Tomlinson’s commission will be charged with finding out if the community wants rail and its potential impact on the area.
A passenger rail proposal from Macon to Atlanta is still on a transportation wish list. However, officials are still a long way away from putting their lists to voters. Regional officials across the state will finalize the list of eligible projects by October.
The organization Georgians for Passenger Rail will try to include projects for a passenger rail commuter line from Macon to Atlanta in the regional transportation sales tax to be voted on in November of 2012.
